Few Telugu festivals are as joyful as Atla Tadde. Orange gorintaku (henna) on the hands from the night before, a meal eaten in the dark before dawn, a day of swings, songs and games with friends, and an evening puja under the rising moon: for generations of girls in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it has been one of the happiest days of the year. Beneath the fun lies a heartfelt prayer to Gauri for a blessed married life, for a good spouse, and for harmony at home.

What Atla Tadde is and why it matters

Atla Tadde falls on the Tritiya (tadiya, or tadde, in Telugu) of the dark fortnight of Ashwayuja, a few days after Sharad Purnima. The name joins two words: attlu, the thin pancakes offered to the Goddess, and tadde, the third lunar day. In some vrata books it is also called Chandrodaya Uma Vratam, the vow to Uma (Gauri) completed at moonrise.

The festival is a regional custom of the Telugu lands, kept mainly by women. Married women pray for the well-being of their husbands and families; unmarried girls traditionally pray for a good and loving spouse. Its central figure is Gauri, the gentle and radiant form of Parvati, who is honoured as the model of steady, devoted married life.

Gauri's long tapas to win Shiva is told in the Shiva Purana and in Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava. Women's vows like Atla Tadde draw on that ideal of patience and loyalty. The swings, attlu and games are folk tradition handed down from mother to daughter, and they are no less sacred for being local. Customs vary from district to district and from family to family, so treat everything below as a guide rather than a rulebook.

How Atla Tadde is celebrated

The day before: gorintaku

On the eve of the festival, girls and women grind fresh gorintaku (henna leaves) or use henna paste and decorate their palms and fingertips. A deep colour by morning is greeted with delight. Many families also prepare the batter for attlu in advance.

Before dawn: the early meal

Women and girls wake well before sunrise, which is 6:13 AM in Hyderabad, and eat a simple meal. Rice with curd, gongura or another pickle, and a vegetable curry are common, though the menu is a family matter. In many neighbourhoods girls gather in groups for this pre-dawn meal, which is part of the fun.

Through the day: swings, songs and games

The day is spent fasting, but it is not a solemn fast. Swings (uyyala) are hung from trees or beams, and girls take turns swinging while singing traditional Atla Tadde songs. Folk games and visits to friends fill the hours. In towns and apartment complexes, women's groups now often organise a common swing and a shared evening puja.

After moonrise: Gauri puja and the meal

In the evening Gauri is worshipped, attlu are offered, vayanam is given to a married woman, and the moon is sighted. Only then is the fast broken, usually with the attlu themselves and a festive meal.

Simple Atla Tadde puja at home

  1. Clean the puja space in the evening and place a picture or small image of Gauri, or a cone of turmeric shaped as Gauri, on a plate with a lamp.
  2. Begin with a short prayer to Ganesha, the customary start of any puja.
  3. Offer turmeric, kumkum, flowers, bangles and a few grains of akshata (rice) to Gauri.
  4. Offer attlu as naivedyam, with jaggery or fruit if you wish.
  5. Set aside a portion of attlu with turmeric, kumkum and bangles as vayanam for another married woman. Exchange it with respect and receive her blessing.
  6. After moonrise (7:39 PM in Hyderabad), look at the moon, offer a little water, and pray for your family.
  7. Break the fast with prasad and share the attlu with family and friends.

If your family reads a vrata katha, an elder woman usually reads it aloud before the moon is sighted. Versions of the story differ between regions, so use the one your family knows rather than any single printed text.

A Ganesha mantra to begin: many families start the puja with this simple name-mantra:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः॥

oṃ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ||

Meaning: Om, salutations to Ganapati. Chant it a few times before you begin. No elaborate mantras are required for Atla Tadde; a sincere prayer to Gauri in your own words is a complete offering.

Essential versus optional: the prayer to Gauri and the moonrise darshan are the heart of the festival. The pre-dawn meal, the strictness of the fast, henna, swings, vayanam and the number of attlu offered are cherished customs that vary by household.

Breaking the fast at moonrise: a gentle health note

Atla Tadde asks women to go from a pre-dawn meal to a meal after 7:39 PM, which in Hyderabad is roughly 14 hours. For a healthy adult this is usually manageable, but a few simple habits make it kinder on the body:

  • Make the pre-dawn meal balanced rather than heavy: rice or millet with curd, a dal or vegetable and a glass of water. Curd and buttermilk help many people through the day.
  • Rest during the hottest hours. Swing and play in the morning and evening rather than in the afternoon sun.
  • If you feel dizzy, shaky, faint or unusually tired, drink water or juice and eat something. The Goddess does not ask anyone to harm their health.
  • At moonrise, break the fast with water first, then something light such as a little prasad, a fruit or a couple of attlu, before a full meal. Eating a very large or very oily meal straight away can cause discomfort after a long gap.
  • Avoid gulping cold drinks or very spicy food the moment you break the fast.

Who should not fast strictly: pregnant and nursing women, the elderly, anyone with diabetes (especially on insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar), low blood pressure, kidney disease or another medical condition, and anyone on regular medication should speak to their doctor first. A puja without fasting, or with fruit and milk during the day, is a complete Atla Tadde. Young girls should be encouraged to enjoy the festival without a strict fast. This note is general information, not medical advice.

Attlu: the offering at the heart of the festival

Attlu are thin, soft pancakes, close cousins of the dosa. Many families make them from a batter of soaked rice and urad dal, while others use rice alone or add a little fenugreek. They are made fresh in the evening, offered to Gauri, given in the vayanam, and then eaten to break the fast.

How many attlu are offered is a family custom. Some households keep a fixed number for the naivedyam and the vayanam; others do not count. If you are unsure, ask the eldest woman in your family. What matters is that the attlu are made with care and shared.

Atla Tadde and Karwa Chauth: the next day

Atla Tadde and Karwa Chauth are kept in the same week and share a spirit of women's devotion: a day-long fast after Sharad Purnima, ending with the moon. They are separate festivals. Atla Tadde is the Telugu observance on Tritiya with Gauri puja and attlu; Karwa Chauth is the North Indian fast on Chaturthi with the karwa pot and the sieve. In India this year Karwa Chauth is on Thursday 29 October; see our Karwa Chauth 2026 date and city-wise moonrise guide and the Panchangam for 29 October 2026.

Telugu families abroad: check your date

Abroad, the date of Atla Tadde depends on when Tritiya is current at local moonrise, so it can differ from India by a day. We do not convert India's timings to other countries. Two practical pointers:

  • In the USA and Canada, Karwa Chauth (Chaturthi at moonrise) falls on Wednesday 28 October, a day earlier than in India. Since Atla Tadde is kept on the Tritiya before it, many temples in North America may observe Atla Tadde on Tuesday 27 October. See our USA Karwa Chauth moonrise guide for the local picture.
  • In the UK, Europe, the Gulf, Singapore and Malaysia, local sunrise on 28 October still falls in Krishna Tritiya, but the evening may already be Chaturthi in some places. Your temple's panchang is the safest guide.
  • Look up moonrise for your own city in a reliable almanac or weather app, and follow the date announced by your local temple or Telugu association.
  • If a weekday fast is hard with work, keep the prayer and the evening puja and share attlu with Telugu friends at the weekend. The devotion is what counts.

For families and children

Atla Tadde is a festival children remember for life: orange henna, swings and late-evening moon-watching. Let girls lead the songs and games, and let boys help hang the swing and make attlu. Tell the story of Parvati's tapas simply: she believed, she persevered, and she was blessed. Older children may enjoy comparing Atla Tadde with Karwa Chauth to see how India celebrates the same values in many languages.

Frequently asked questions

When is Atla Tadde in 2026?

Atla Tadde 2026 is on Wednesday 28 October, according to Drik Panchang for Hyderabad. Krishna Tritiya of Ashwayuja is current from sunrise and lasts until 1:06 AM IST on 29 October, so it covers the evening moonrise at 7:39 PM.

What time is moonrise on Atla Tadde 2026?

In Hyderabad the moon rises at 7:39 PM on 28 October (Drik Panchang). It may become visible a few minutes later above buildings or trees. Moonrise differs from town to town, so check a local panchang for your place.

Is Atla Tadde the same as Karwa Chauth?

They are close in spirit but different festivals. Atla Tadde is the Telugu observance on Krishna Tritiya with Gauri puja and attlu; Karwa Chauth is the North Indian fast on Krishna Chaturthi. In India, Karwa Chauth falls the next day, Thursday 29 October 2026.

Can I drink water during the Atla Tadde fast?

Yes, if you need to. Many women keep a strict fast, but water, fruit or milk during the day are widely accepted. Pregnant or nursing women, the elderly and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure or another medical condition should consult a doctor and need not fast at all.

What if the moon is hidden by clouds?

Families traditionally complete the puja and break the fast after the moonrise time given in the panchang, even if clouds hide the moon. Offer your prayer facing the east, where the moon is rising.

Is Atla Tadde on the same date in the USA and Canada?

Not necessarily. The fast is tied to Tritiya being current at moonrise, and in North America Tritiya ends earlier in the local day. Karwa Chauth falls on Wednesday 28 October there, so many temples may keep Atla Tadde a day earlier. Confirm with your local temple or Telugu association.

What are attlu and vayanam?

Attlu are thin dosa-like pancakes offered to Gauri as naivedyam. Vayanam is a gift of attlu with turmeric, kumkum, bangles or a blouse piece given to another married woman as a blessing. The number of attlu and the contents of the vayanam vary by family.

Editor's note (10 October 2026)
