Why devotees visit Venkateswara temples

Venkateswara, also called Srinivasa and Balaji, is worshipped as a form of Vishnu. According to TTD's account of the legend, Vishnu came to the Tirumala hills as Srinivasa, married Padmavati, and took a large loan from Kubera for the wedding; many devotees say their offerings help repay that debt. Families visit his temples for weddings, to fulfil vows and to offer thanks, and temples abroad were often modelled on Tirumala so that devotees could have darshan without travelling to India.

Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Tirumala (Andhra Pradesh)

The temple stands on Venkatadri, one of the seven Seshachalam hills above Tirupati, and is managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). In Sri Vaishnava tradition Tirumala (Tiruvenkatam) is one of the 108 Divya Desams. Worship follows the Vaikhanasa Agama, and TTD says Ramanuja visited three times and set its rituals in order. The poet Annamacharya, TTD notes, wrote more than 32,000 songs to Venkateswara.

Tradition credits the first temple to a ruler named Tondaiman. More than a thousand inscriptions are found across the hill temple and TTD's shrines below; the best-known early record is the Pallava queen Samavai's gift of a silver image of Bhoga Srinivasa, dated 614 CE by TTD and 966 CE by most epigraphic studies. Krishnadevaraya installed statues of himself and his queens here on 2 January 1517. The sanctum's gold-covered vimana is the Ananda Nilaya Vimanam.

TTD calls the nine-day Srivari Salakatla Brahmotsavam (usually September–October) its most important festival, with the Garuda Vahana on day five. Vaikuntha Ekadasi opens the Vaikuntha Dwaram, and Ratha Saptami is known as the one-day Brahmotsavam. Pilgrims reach Tirumala by bus or car on the ghat road (about 21 km from Tirupati) or on foot along the Alipiri path (about 11 km) or the shorter Srivari Mettu path (about 6 km). Darshan is booked through TTD's official channels, and the record notes its traditional dress rules. Full Tirumala temple page; see also our Tirumala guide for NRIs from the USA.

Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple, Tirumala (Andhra Pradesh)

This shrine of Vishnu as Varaha stands north of the main temple on the bank of Swami Pushkarini, also administered by TTD. TTD's legend says Tirumala was first known as Adi Varaha Kshetra, and that Varaha granted land on the hills to Venkateswara, who in return gave Varaha the first darshan and first naivedyam. So pilgrims traditionally visit Bhu Varaha Swamy before Venkateswara. TTD lists morning and evening darshan sessions (checked October 2026). On the last day of the Brahmotsavam, the processional deities come here before the Chakrasnanam in the Pushkarini. Full Bhu Varaha Swamy page.

Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanur (Andhra Pradesh)

Tiruchanur, also called Alamelumangapuram, is about 5 km from Tirupati. The temple is the shrine of Goddess Padmavathi (Alamelumanga), consort of Venkateswara, worshipped as a form of Lakshmi, and is run by TTD. A Tirumala pilgrimage is traditionally considered incomplete without her blessing. Devotees believe she emerged from a lotus in the temple tank, Padma Sarovaram. TTD says the Sri Krishna Swamy shrine in the compound is the earliest there, with evidence of it by 1221 AD.

The nine-day Karthika Brahmotsavam ends with Panchami Theertham, when very large numbers take a holy dip in Padma Sarovaram. Sevas are booked through TTD's official portal. Full Tiruchanur temple page.

Chilkur Balaji Temple, near Hyderabad (Telangana)

Chilkur is on the banks of Osman Sagar on the western edge of Hyderabad, in Rangareddy district. Venkateswara is worshipped here with Sridevi and Bhudevi. The district administration says the temple was built in the time of Akkanna and Madanna, uncles of Bhakta Ramadas. Tradition tells of a devotee too ill to go to Tirupati, to whom the Lord revealed himself in an anthill nearby.

The temple is widely known as the 'Visa Balaji' temple. Devotees make a wish while walking 11 times around the sanctum and return for 108 rounds once it comes true; this is a matter of faith, not a promise. The temple keeps no hundi, accepts no cash offerings and gives no VIP or paid darshan, so everyone joins one queue. The Brahmotsavam (March–April), Poolangi and Annakota draw the largest crowds. TGSRTC buses run from Mehdipatnam (route 288D). Full Chilkur Balaji page; see also our Chilkur pradakshina guide for NRIs.

Kote Venkataramana Swamy Temple, Bengaluru (Karnataka)

This temple stands beside Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace in the old fort area of Bengaluru, hence 'Kote' (fort). It was built by Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar of Mysore in the 17th century; The South First dates it to 1690. The temple combines Dravidian and Vijayanagara features, with carvings of animals and mythological scenes and a frieze of the marriage of Shiva and Parvati. Vaikunta Ekadashi brings large crowds and early-morning observances. Full Kote Venkataramana page.

Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple, Perumal Malai (Tamil Nadu)

Perumal Malai is a hill about 3 km from Thuraiyur on the Perambalur road, in Tiruchirappalli district. Devotees call it Then Tirupati (South Tirupati): the deity stands with Sridevi and Bhudevi in a wedding pose, and those who cannot travel to Tirupati offer their kanikkai here. Pilgrims climb more than 1,500 steps or take a hill road of about 5 km. The temple is known for granite pillars said to produce musical notes, a Dasavatara Mandapam and a sixteen-armed Narasimha sculpture.

Santhana Srinivasa Perumal Temple, Mogappair, Chennai (Tamil Nadu)

This temple in Mogappair West, near Anna Nagar, is dedicated to Srinivasa Perumal, whose standing image of about nine feet shows a raised protecting hand. Couples come here to pray for children, and in the Santhana Gopala puja an image of the child Krishna is placed on the couple's laps during an archana in their names; devotees believe in its blessing, though no outcome can be promised. The puja is held on the full moon and on certain stars each month, and couples are advised to arrive around 6 am.

A ten-day Brahmotsavam ends on the Revathi star in Aani, and each Purattasi Saturday brings special decoration. Full Mogappair temple page.

Planning a Venkateswara temple pilgrimage

  • Tirupati cluster: Bhu Varaha Swamy, the main Tirumala temple and Tiruchanur are traditionally visited together; plan at least a full day, more if you walk up.
  • Book through official channels only: TTD darshan and Tiruchanur sevas are booked on TTD's own portal; avoid agents.
  • Festival crowds: Brahmotsavams, Vaikuntha Ekadasi and Purattasi Saturdays bring long waits at most of these temples.
  • Climbs: Tirumala's footpaths and Perumal Malai's steps need water, rest stops and comfortable footwear you can leave at the shoe stand.
  • Etiquette: follow each temple's dress code and photography rules. Our temple visit guide explains darshan and etiquette.

Why do pilgrims visit Bhu Varaha Swamy before Venkateswara at Tirumala?

TTD records the tradition that Varaha granted land on the hills to Venkateswara, who in return gave Varaha the first darshan and first naivedyam. For this reason pilgrims traditionally visit the Bhu Varaha Swamy temple by Swami Pushkarini first.

Is there a dress code at Tirumala?

Yes. TTD asks pilgrims to wear traditional dress for darshan: for men a dhoti, or pyjama with an upper cloth; for women a saree or half-saree with blouse, or a churidar with an upper cloth. Check TTD's official site for current rules.

Why is Chilkur called the Visa Balaji temple?

Head priest C.S. Rangarajan has said the name arose in the 1990s, when students from nearby colleges prayed there with 11 pradakshinas and then got their visas. Devotees make a wish while walking 11 rounds and return for 108 rounds if it is fulfilled. It is a matter of faith; no outcome is guaranteed.

Which day is special for Venkateswara?

Saturdays, especially in the Tamil month of Purattasi (September–October), are marked at Perumal Malai, Mogappair and Helensburgh, according to their records. Thursday is widely kept for Vishnu worship; see our Thursday guide.

Can I book Tirumala darshan from abroad?

TTD offers several darshan categories, including free Sarva Darshan, time-slotted darshan and paid Special Entry Darshan, booked only through its official channels. Quotas and fees change often, so check tirumala.org or ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in before you plan.

Editor's note (18 October 2026)

Every fact about these temples comes from HinduTone's source-checked temple records, built from independent published sources such as TTD and district administrations, state tourism departments, newspapers and architectural histories; a temple's own website is not counted as an independent source. Where a record gives no timing or best season, we have not added one. Darshan categories, quotas and hours change, so confirm with each temple before travelling.
