On the morning of Diwali, Sunday 8 November 2026, Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain marked the festival in its own Shaivite way: a special Bhasma Aarti in which Baba Mahakal received a fragrant herbal ubtan and a warm-water bath, with two Annakoot offerings planned for the day, according to a Free Press Journal report from Ujjain.

Because Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi began on Saturday afternoon, the sunrise tithi on Sunday was Chaturdashi, so the temple observed Roop Chaudas (Naraka Chaturdashi) and Diwali 2026 on the same day. Across India, the Naraka Chaturdashi oil bath and Lakshmi Puja also fall on Sunday 8 November this year; see Naraka Chaturdashi 2026.

What is Bhasma Aarti?

Bhasma Aarti is the best-known daily ritual of Mahakaleshwar and is unique to it among the twelve Jyotirlingas. Before dawn, after abhishekam and shringar, sacred ash (bhasma) is offered to the Jyotirlinga while priests chant and the hall resounds with "Har Har Mahadev" and "Jai Shri Mahakal". For a first-hand account of the ritual, read our Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti darshan guide.

Mahakal is worshipped as the Lord of Time. Devotees believe that darshan of the Bhasma Aarti removes the fear of death and gives spiritual protection; the ash itself is a reminder of the impermanence of the body and of detachment.

Mahakaleshwar's Diwali 2026 rituals

  • Ubtan seva and Abhyang Snan: this year the ubtan seva was entrusted to Bharat Pujari's family. Women of the family prepared the paste, which, according to priest Pradeep Pujari, contains sandalwood, saffron, amber, perfume and fruit extracts. It is applied during the Bhasma Aarti, followed by a bath with warm water.
  • Warm water until Holi: according to priest Rajesh Guru, Mahakal's warm-water bathing begins on Roop Chaudas and continues until Holi.
  • Two Annakoot offerings: the first is offered by the priest families after the morning aarti; the second, organised by the temple administration, during the 10:30 am aarti. It includes traditional dishes prepared at home.
  • One sparkler only: for security reasons, only one sparkler is lit at the temple this year.

Elsewhere in Ujjain, Jain temples offered Nirvana Laddus on Diwali, marking Bhagwan Mahavira's nirvana, the same report noted.

Why Diwali at Mahakal is special

Diwali celebrates Sri Rama's return to Ayodhya, Krishna's victory over Narakasura and the welcome of Goddess Lakshmi. At Mahakaleshwar the festival takes on another layer: bhasma, the symbol of detachment, is offered on the night of lights. For devotees it is a reminder that the truest light is the light of knowledge and liberation, and many consider darshan on this day especially auspicious.
