Kubera Puja on Friday: Why Families Choose Shukravar, a Simple Home Worship and Mantras
Friday Kubera puja is a household custom, not a scriptural rule. It follows from Friday's link with Lakshmi. Here is how it compares with Thursday, Trayodashi and Purnima, with a short weekly worship and the mantras families use.

Quick answer: Many families worship Kubera on Fridays, usually together with Lakshmi, because Friday (Shukravar) is the weekly day of Lakshmi worship. This is a household custom, not a rule from scripture. Others prefer Thursday. Drik Panchang notes that Trayodashi and Purnima tithis are traditionally linked with Kubera, with Dhanteras his main festival and Sharad Purnima his birthday. A Friday Kubera puja can be short: a lamp, Ganesha first, Lakshmi, then Kubera with his name-mantra.
ॐ श्रीकुबेराय नमः ।
Om Śrī Kuberāya Namaḥ, "Om, salutations to Shri Kubera". This is a devotional name-mantra, used for each offering in Drik Panchang's Kuber Puja Vidhi.
Why Friday?
- Friday is Lakshmi's day. Across much of India, Friday is the day for Lakshmi worship and the Shukravar vrat; see Friday Lakshmi Puja and Friday fasting (Shukravar Vrat).
- Kubera is usually worshipped with Lakshmi. Drik Panchang notes that Kubera is traditionally worshipped during Lakshmi Puja. So families who keep a Friday Lakshmi puja often add Kubera to it.
- Household guides say the same. Popular puja guides mention Friday for Lakshmi-Kubera worship. One gives Tuesday and Friday, another Friday or Thursday, and another says some families simply choose Friday by custom.
None of these comes from a scriptural rule for Kubera. Treat Friday as one good option among several.
Friday, Thursday or a tithi?
Choice | Why families choose it | Nature |
|---|---|---|
Friday | Lakshmi's weekly day; Lakshmi and Kubera worshipped together | Household custom |
Thursday | Some guides prefer it for Kubera alone, linking it with Jupiter | Popular custom / astrological view |
Trayodashi and Purnima | Drik Panchang: "historically associated with Lord Kubera" | Traditional calendar association |
Dhanteras | Drik Panchang: the most important festival for Kubera (6 November in 2026) | Festival |
Sharad Purnima | Drik Panchang: Kubera's birthday | Festival tradition |
If your family already has a day, keep it. If you are starting, many people find it easiest to add Kubera to an existing Friday Lakshmi lamp.
A short Friday Kubera puja at home (customary)
This weekly form is shortened from the Kuber Puja Vidhi published by Drik Panchang. For the full festival puja with muhurat and samagri, see Kuber Puja 2026 on Dhanteras.
What you need (keep it simple): a lamp, incense, flowers, kumkum and akshata (unbroken rice), a little fruit or sweet as naivedya, and a Kubera image or yantra. Drik Panchang notes that the cash box or jewellery box can stand in for Kubera.
- After a bath, light the lamp in the puja area. Many families face north, the direction given to Kubera in ritual texts. This is a custom, not a rule.
- Ganesha first: a short prayer such as Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
- Lakshmi: offer kumkum and flowers with Om Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namah or your family's Lakshmi prayer.
- Meditate on Kubera with the dhyana verse (below).
- Offer to Kubera: sandal paste or kumkum, akshata, flowers, incense, the lamp and naivedya, saying Om Shri Kuberaya Namah with each.
- Chant one Kubera mantra: 11, 21 or 108 times is common. The count is customary, not compulsory.
- Close with anena pūjanena śrīdhanādhyakṣaḥ śrīkuberaḥ prīyatām ("by this worship may Shri Kubera, lord of wealth, be pleased") and aarti if you like.
The whole worship can take ten to fifteen minutes. Families who also keep the Friday Lakshmi fast follow their own vrat rules for food.
The dhyana verse
मनुज-बाह्य-विमान-स्थितम्, गरुड-रत्न-निभं निधि-नायकम् । शिव-सखं मुकुटादि-विभूषितम्, वर-गदे दधतं भजे तुन्दिलम् ॥
Transliteration: manuja-bāhya-vimāna-sthitam, garuḍa-ratna-nibhaṃ nidhi-nāyakam । śiva-sakhaṃ mukuṭādi-vibhūṣitam, vara-gade dadhataṃ bhaje tundilam ॥
Meaning: "I worship the pot-bellied lord of the treasures, who sits in a vimana carried by men, who shines like an emerald, Shiva's friend, adorned with crown and ornaments, holding the boon-giving gesture and a mace."
Label: stotra (devotional dhyana verse), from Drik Panchang's Kuber Puja Vidhi.

What devotees believe
Families who keep a Friday Kubera puja describe it as a weekly habit of gratitude for the household's income and a prayer that it is earned and spent rightly. Some guides promise relief from debt or a rise in income from a fixed number of Fridays. Those are claims, not teachings, and we do not repeat them. No puja guarantees a financial outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Can Kubera puja be done on Friday?
Yes. Many families worship Kubera on Fridays together with Lakshmi, since Friday is Lakshmi's weekly day. It is a household custom, not a scriptural rule.
Is Friday or Thursday better for Kubera?
There is no single rule. Friday is common because of its link with Lakshmi, and some guides prefer Thursday. Drik Panchang associates Kubera with Trayodashi and Purnima tithis. Follow your family's custom.
Which mantra should I chant on Friday for Kubera?
The name-mantra "Om Shri Kuberaya Namah" is enough. Many add the Kubera Gayatri or the mantra "Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya…", chanted 11, 21 or 108 times by custom.
Should Lakshmi be worshipped with Kubera on Friday?
Customarily, yes. Drik Panchang notes that Kubera is traditionally worshipped together with Lakshmi, and Friday is her day. Worship Ganesha first, then Lakshmi, then Kubera.
Which direction should I face for Friday Kubera puja?
Many families face north because ritual texts assign the north to Kubera. It is a custom. If your puja room faces another way, worship there.
How many Fridays should I do Kubera puja?
There is no fixed number in scripture. Some families do it every Friday as a habit of gratitude. Claims that a set number of Fridays will clear debts are not part of the tradition.
