Why Ujjain matters in Kartik
Ujjain, on the Shipra river in Madhya Pradesh, is counted among the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) and is home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The Mahakal lingam is commonly described as the only Jyotirlinga that faces south (Dakshinamukhi). Kartik is a month of river bathing, lamp offerings and worship of both Shiva and Vishnu, and Ujjain brings these threads together.
For the temple's history, architecture and general visiting advice, see our Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga guide.
Mahakaleshwar in Kartik
Devotees visit Mahakaleshwar throughout the year, and Kartik brings extra crowds, especially on Mondays and around Kartik Purnima. The temple conducts its daily aartis, including the early-morning Bhasma Aarti that Ujjain is famous for. Timings, the permission system for Bhasma Aarti, dress rules and fees are set by the temple administration and are revised from time to time. We therefore do not list them here. Please use the temple's official website or notices.
Many devotees offer water, milk and bilva leaves on Mondays, chant Om Namah Shivaya and the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, and observe a simple fast. If you fast, keep it gentle: drink water, include fruit or milk if needed, and do not fast if you are pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication without your doctor's advice.
Kartik snan in the Shipra
A morning bath in a sacred river is one of the main Kartik observances. In Ujjain, the Shipra and its ghats, such as Ram Ghat, are the traditional place for it. On Kartik Purnima, the ghats are especially crowded and lamps are floated in the evening.
- Go early and keep to the ghats designated for bathing. Follow any instructions or advisories from the local authorities.
- Water levels and quality vary by season. If in doubt, sprinkle the river water on your head or bathe at home with a few drops of holy water.
- Children and older people should be accompanied. Wet steps are slippery.
- Do not leave plastic, soap or flower waste at the ghat. Use the collection points.
Hari-Har Milan on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi
One of the best-known Kartik traditions of Ujjain is Hari-Har Milan, the meeting of Hari (Vishnu) and Har (Shiva). As commonly described, Mahakal is taken in a night procession to meet Vishnu at the Gopal Mandir. Shiva is offered tulsi and Vishnu receives bilva, a symbolic exchange of the two deities' favourite leaves, showing the unity of the Shaiva and Vaishnava paths. The tradition is linked with Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, which falls on Monday 23 November 2026.
Procession routes and timings are fixed by the temple committee and local administration each year, so check their announcements. Our guide to Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2026 explains the story and the observance in detail.
Devutthana Ekadashi and Tulasi Vivah
Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi on Friday 20 November 2026 is the day Vishnu is said to wake from his four-month sleep. Tulasi Vivah, the symbolic wedding of Tulsi with Vishnu, follows, and Drik Panchang lists it on Saturday 21 November. Households in Ujjain, as elsewhere, decorate the Tulsi plant, light lamps and offer sweets and fruit. See the Devutthana Ekadashi 2026 guide for Parana times.
Kartik Purnima on 24 November
Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026, with the Purnima tithi ending at 08:23 PM IST per Drik Panchang. It is the day of the final Kartik snan, lamp-lighting and charity. Shaiva tradition remembers it as Tripurari Purnima, Shiva's victory over Tripurasura, and Varanasi celebrates Dev Diwali the same day. In Ujjain, devotees bathe in the Shipra at dawn, offer lamps at the ghats and temples and give food or warm clothing to people in need. Read more in our Kartik Purnima 2026 guide and Tripurari Purnima 2026.
A traditional Kartik Mela is associated with the Shipra at this time of year. Its dates and arrangements are announced by the local authorities, so please check their notices rather than relying on a date from us.
Mahakal processions on Mondays
Ujjain is known for the processions (sawari) of Mahakal through the city streets on certain Mondays of the rainy season and again in the Kartik-Margashirsha period. The dates and route are announced by the temple committee each year. If you plan your trip around a procession, wait for the official announcement.

- Harsiddhi Temple, a Shakti shrine connected with Ujjain's long history and traditionally counted among the Shakti Peethas in some lists.
- Kal Bhairav Temple, the city's well-known guardian shrine of Shiva as Bhairava.
- Mangalnath Temple, linked in tradition with the planet Mars.
